Krillion Geography: Strategy for Place Prompts

Place prompts are where Krillion's scoring is at its most generous and its most unforgiving. The world offers thousands of valid countries, cities, rivers and regions, yet most players type the same handful of famous names. If you can step past that crowd, geography is one of the easiest places to land deep tiers. This page explains why the crowd forms, gives five ways to get around it, and shows where to find past answers.

Where geography turns up

Place questions can appear in the daily dive alongside every other topic. Krillion also has a dedicated Geography pack among its themed packs, presented as a trip around the world, with 30 rounds that the game calls expeditions. The strategy below applies to both. If you like place prompts, the pack is the best practice ground the game offers, and our unlimited guide covers the endless mode as a second option.

Why everyone answers the same places

Ask a room to name a country in Europe and you will hear France, Germany, Italy and Spain long before anyone says Moldova. This is an invented example, not a real Krillion prompt, but the pattern holds everywhere. People reach for capitals, the largest places, places in the news and places they have been on holiday. Because the game scores by how familiar an answer is, those names fill the lowest tier on almost any place prompt. The good news is that the crowd is predictable, which means you can plan around it.

Five ways to dig deeper

  1. Go one level smaller. If the prompt allows it, swap the country for a province, the city for a district, the mountain range for a single peak. Smaller units have far fewer people competing for them.
  2. Change continent. Players drift toward places in their own part of the world. A valid answer from a region the average player rarely thinks about is often worth more than a clever answer from a familiar one.
  3. Think in lists you already know. Landlocked countries, island nations, countries that border exactly two others, rivers that cross a border: any list you have memorised is a quick route to answers that sit outside the front row.
  4. Watch out for the famous small place. Tiny, quirky places such as microstates are exactly what people type when they want to look clever. That is the game's too clever trap, explained on the scoring page. Go one step past the first unusual name that comes to mind.
  5. Check the wording twice. A prompt that says city is not asking for a country, and a prompt about a region may or may not accept a whole country. Reading the exact wording saves wasted guesses when the clock is running.

Spelling, accents and alternative names

Place names are full of accents, transliterations and older forms. The game checks guesses against known alternative names and forgives small typos, so you do not need to agonise over a diacritic or a doubled letter. A guess one or two characters away from a recognised name can still count. That said, a former or local name is not automatically a rarer answer: it usually resolves to the same place, and the same place scores the same tier however you spell it.

Practising place prompts

Recall under time pressure is a skill, and it improves with repetition. A simple routine is to pick one region a week and learn its countries, capitals and a few second cities, then test yourself in the Geography pack or the endless mode. Pay attention to which of your answers land low; those are the names everyone else knows too, and they are the first ones to replace.

Finding geography answers on this site

Every daily prompt, place questions included, is covered on that day's answer page with all six tiers and three hints. Browse by date in the archive, or start with the most recent days below. The hints page always carries the latest prompts with the answers folded away, and the wiki collects the rest of the rules.

Questions people ask

Does Krillion have a geography mode?
There is a Geography pack among the themed packs, made of 30 rounds the game calls expeditions. Place prompts can also come up in the daily dive.
Do I need to spell place names exactly?
No. Guesses are checked against alternative names and small typos are forgiven, so accents and transliterations rarely matter.
Why do capitals and big countries score so low?
Because almost everyone types them. Krillion scores by how familiar an answer is, and the most famous places fill the lowest tier on most place prompts.
